Combining toughness and athletic ability, Richard “Gouch” Gauthier established himself as one of the most versatile athletes of the 1960’s at Lowell High School.
As a member of Coach Ray Riddick’s Red and Gray football teams, Dick was a two-year starter at offensive Guard and Defensive End, earning All-Star Honors his senior year.
It was as a wrestler that Dick earned his highest honors. Competing for Coach George Bossi, he placed 3rd at the Sectionals and 5th at the State Championships as a sophomore. As both a junior and senior, Dick earned Sectional and State Championships and placed 2nd at the New England Championships. As a senior, he captained the Red Raiders’ undefeated team and was voted into the 1967 Interscholastic Wrestling Honor Roll.
As a member of Coach John Lang’s track teams, Dick broke the Lowell High School record in the Javelin en route to 3rd and 2nd place finishes in the Massachusetts State Class A Championships his junior and senior years (1966, 1967) respectively.
Dick was voted Lowell High School Athlete of the Year for 1967.
Dick brought his wrestling expertise to the coaching ranks at Algonquin Regional High School, compiling a 74–22 Dual Meet Record from 1976–1982.
