PATRICK MORASSE, Class of 2002

A four-year varsity performer for Coaches Phil Maia and Jim Deprofio in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, Pat Morasse’s achievements stand as testimony to his excellence as an athlete.During his career at Lowell High School and then the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, Pat won honors at the local, state, regional and national levels for his outstanding performances. As a sophomore (1999-2000) at LHS Pat won Merrimack Valley Conference All­ Conference honors in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. He was a Lowell Sun All-Star in cross country as Lowell won the post-season MVC Championship Meet. During his junior year (2000-2001) Pat once again earned MVC All-Conference honors  during all three seasons and again was a Lowell Sun All-Star in cross country. He was instrumental in the Red and Gray’s 2nd place finish in the Eastern Massachusetts Division I Championship Meet. He was MVC 1 Mile Champion in outdoor track.

As a senior (2001-2002) Pat earned plaudits as one of the most accomplished high school distance runners in Massachusetts. A three-season Captain, Pat won MVC All­ Conference honors in all three seasons for the third consecutive year and received Lowell Sun All-Star honors in all three seasons as well. His cross country campaign was one of the most successful in school history. Selected as MVC and Lowell Sun Runner-of-the­ Year, Pat led the Raiders to an undefeated MVC Championship season, another 2nd place finish in the Eastern Mass Division I Championship Meet and 3rd place in the All-State Championship Meet.

Along the way Pat set course records at Lowell, Dracut, Central Catholic, Billerica, and Chelmsford. He was also the individual champion at the prestigious State Coaches Invitational and Catholic Memorial Invitational Meets. Pat was named as a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic for his accomplishments. He continued his storybook senior year in both indoor and outdoor track, finishing 3rd (indoors) and 2nd (outdoors) in the 1 mile at the Eastern Massachusetts Division I Championship Meets and again being a key factor as LHS won team honors (undefeated dual season indoors and All-State Championship Meet runners-up outdoors).

After graduation Pat continued his successful running career at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell (2002-2006), developing into one of the most successful Riverhawk distance runners in school history. Over the course of his college career,Pat set 5 UML school records, won 4 New England Championship events, and was the individual Champion of the 2004 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship Meet. He also was named NCAA Division II Northeast Region Runner-of-the-Year on 3 occasions. In addition to running in 3 NCAA Championship Cross Counry Meets, Pat qualified 9 times on the track for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets. He won All-American honors on 5 occasions in the 800-and 1500 meters, the 1 Mile and the Distance Medley Relay.

In the final meet of his career at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championship Meet, Pat chose to wear his old Lowell HS jersey to pay homage to his roots on Kirk Street and to show his pride in his hometown. Despite the fact that his two events, the 800 meters and 1500 meters, were only 30 minutes apart, Pat went out in a blaze of glory, capping off his career by earning All-American honors in both events.
