Labeled by a Boston newspaper as Lowell High School’s “Best Back in 20 Years,” George Ford carved out a niche for himself in the illustrious history of Lowell High Football.
During his 4 years in the Red and Gray backfield, he dazzled teammates and opponents alike with his ball carrying ability. He served as Co-Captain of the Lowell High Team in 1943, his senior year.
George received numerous post-season honors. He was named Co-Captain of the Boston Traveler’s All-Scholastic Team and Massachusetts High School “Back of the Year” in 1943.
After service under General George Patton in World War II, George attended the University of Georgia, where he played football until his playing career was ended by an automobile accident.

Coach George Edward Ford, 76, a former wrestling, football, and golf coach at McEachern High School, in addition to serving for more than 22 years on the Powder Springs City Council, died Saturday, February 2, 2002, of complications from a recent stroke and kidney disease.
The City of Powder Springs is in the process of turning the former Powder Springs Elementary School into a community center. The center will be named in Ford’s honor because of his influence in the city. Mr. Ford was a native of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, and attended The University of Georgia on a football scholarship. He played in both the Sugar and Orange Bowls as a member of the Bulldogs before injuries derailed his career. After graduating from Georgia, Ford coached at several high schools around the state, including Glennville High School from 1951 to 1955, before landing at McEachern High School in 1961.
Coach Ford also served in General George Patton’s Third Army in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 294 in Powder Springs and other service organizations. He was inducted into the Lowell, Massachusetts, Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He is survived by one son, John C. Ford of Atlanta; one daughter, Pamela Terrell of Nashua, New Hampshire; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, at First Baptist Church of Powder Springs, with the Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Athens.
